2011 SCRC Field Day

2011 SCRC Field Day

According to the ARRL, Field Day is the most popular annual on-the-air Ham Radio event held in the US and Canada. Over 35,000 ham radio ops gravitiate to their clubs, ham radio friends or simply operate alone.

Unlike other ham radio contests, Field Day is not considered a fomal contest. That fact helps to explain Field Day’s popularity among hams. Field Day is a time when hams meet to highlight many aspects of the hobby.

Some do treat Field Day as a contest, others leverage the opportunity to drill for emergencies. Field Day provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Ham Radio to local leaders and other individuals that may be served during an emergency. Many clubs consider field day as the hiighlight of their annual events.

Perhaps you are looking for a Field Day operation in your area? The ARRL has supplied a Field Day Locator this year.

HFpack was founded in November 2000 by Bonnie Crystal KQ6XA, and currently has about 7000 members. HFpack is the International Resource for Amateur Radio HF Portable – Mobile – Emergency Communications – Ham Radio Information Exchange – Nets – Ionospheric Propagation.

HFpack provides an information exchange about transceivers, antennas, systems, High Frequency communications, HF packs, propagation, EMCOMM, new developments and techniques in VHF and HF portable operation. Radio Amateurs are invited to participate in HFpack’s group and on-the-air nets around the world. The group exchanges information and provides a framework for communications between radio operators on-the-air and over the internet.

HFpack’s egroup is the largest fully-moderated discussion group of this type, primarily utilized by amateur radio operators interested in all kinds of HF portable, mobile and emergency communications and equipment. Subscription and membership in HFpack’s egroup is free. It is currently using the Yahoo groups server system, where messages can be read and posted via the web, direct email, email, daily digests, and special bulletins. Participants in HFpack’s egroup observe friendly cooperation.

This video show how to work PSK-31 on an iPhone or iPad using remote control (RDP). The remote control program controls the applications on the computer in the shack. The computer is running Ham Radio Deluxe version 5. If your iPhone or iPad is in the proximity of your wifi network, this can be a fun and relaxing way to work PSK or RTTY on the shack laptop. The combination of PSKreporter and Ham Radio Deluxe makes digital ops simple. In this video, Jaadu RDP is the iPhone client of choice.

This video is an excellent presentation of a 2 Meter Go Bag with a detailed description of the contents. There are some great tips and ideas in this video. Some are common sense but I like the way this Ham has packaged his gear.

The Husky bags from home depot is something I want to get for some of my QRP gear. Since I don’t camp, it would not have dawned on me that water resistant paper would be another good item to add to the Go-Bag.
